One-day conference includes community resources, panel discussion, legislative forum, and entertainment
Wednesday, October 20, 2010 – The IU Northwest Office of Diversity Programming and the Office of Student Support Services will host a one-day conference on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. to raise awareness for Disabilities Awareness Month, recognized during the month of October.
The event, held in the Library Conference Center (Room 105ABC), will include community resources and exhibitors, a panel discussion, a legislative forum, and entertainment.
The focus of the event will be on increasing awareness and empowering acceptance of individuals with disabilities.
Exhibitors at the event include About Special Kids, AccessAbilities, ARC of Indiana, and Deaf Services, Inc., among others. Starting at 10 a.m. all exhibits will provide a five- to eight-minute presentation on the services they provide.
A panel discussion, entitled “Making Disabilities a Temporary Condition,” will follow at 11 a.m.
A legislative forum in collaboration with The ARC of Indiana and ARC Bridges will start at 2 p.m. Candidates from the Indiana House and Senate will participate in an exchange with constituents regarding programs and services for people with developmental disabilities of all ages. Specific topics of the discussion will include the Medicaid Waiver.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this one-day conference.
The Library Conference Center is located on the southeast corner of campus at 35th Avenue and Broadway in Gary.
