Well, as everyone expected, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 dominated at the box office last weekend and surprisingly, the other new release The Next Three Days landed halfway down the list at number five.
Up this weekend, and due to the Thanksgiving Day holiday that starts tomorrow the 25th, are a number of big budget blockbusters. Typically a mediocre weekend for moviegoers, the double edged sword of Thanksgiving offers up a huge potential audience yet keeps them busy with family gatherings…unless a blockbuster comes out. Last year, The Twilight Saga: New Moon came out the weekend before Thanksgiving and did $72m in one day then dropped 70% the following weekend (Thanksgiving). While the four movies coming out this weekend have a lot of star power, I would be willing to bet that not one will have the appeal to unseat last weekends big winner.
The first movie on our list is Tangled, the Disney adaptation of the Fairy Tale of Rapunzel. The interesting thing about this movie is that it is the last Fairy Tale that Disney will be producing, 73 years after the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Next up is Burlesque starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. Drama, dancing, lights, costumes, singing by Christina Aguilera and Oscar Winner Cher. Sounds like all the elements of an enjoyable evening at the movies to me. Going up against it in the drama category is another potential date night classic Love and Other Drugs. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, I am having a tough time deciding which of these two movies is going to outdo the other.
Finally we have the action thriller Faster which stars Dwayne Johnson. Can you smell what The Rock is cookin’? Let me guess…Action! He has proven himself as the leading man in a number of great movies including one from Walt Disney so teaming him up with the likes of Billy Bob Thornton as his antagonist means that this will be nothing short of great. Unfortunately, with the family oriented holiday weekend, most of the ticket sales will be directed at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Tangled so I see this one coming in at number four or five.
Next week has the features Black Swan and Warriors Way coming to theatres and with Christmas coming up, I’m sure the studios have a few tricks up their sleeve so stay tuned and stay informed!
From all of us at NWIMe.com, we wish you and your families a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
