Petey The Perch, the mascot for the Portage Indiana, annual Perch Fest and Gran Prix Celebration was a guest of honor at the Portage City Council meeting on Tuesday, December 21st, 2010 which was their “end of year housekeeping” meeting held at City Hall.

Mayor Olga G. Velazquez put in to the history books, a proclamation to declare the 2011 Perch Fest and Gran Prix to be the signature festival for the City of Portage. The proclamation (see below) also encourages the citizens of Portage to volunteer and to share ideas with the festival committee and to enjoy the festivities that their festival has to offer.

In a video seen below, Petey the Perch, a well loved mascot for the city, was in attendance for the reading of the proclamation.

Also in the meeting, Mayor Velazquez presented a certificate of appreciation to Brendan Clancy, who takes office of the Portage Township Trustee on January 1st 2011.

Afterwards, Mayor Velazquez spoke to the “Me Gang” and hinted at some of the many exciting things that are in store for the City of Portage in 2011.

Mayor Velazquez also added that the upcoming festival that will be held in August 2011 will be the their best yet. She also added that it will be expanded to a two weekend celebration with the dates of Aug. 5th – 7th and Aug. 12th -14th.

In a conversation with David Byers, the Portage  Assistant Superintendent, he said that he has been contacting local sports organizations to put together a “Petey’s mascot Olympics” for the 2011 festival.

In closing of this article, it was an honor to be in attendance of this meeting, and to share conversation with a Mayor that has a fantastic vision towards the future of the City of Portage.
