WINNIPEG, Manitoba – 6-22-2010 In need of a starter for the second game of a three-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes tonight at Canwest Park, the Gary SouthShore RailCats have signed right-hander Nolan Nicholson to a contract, bringing back the pitcher who spent most of Spring Training with the team.
Nicholson, 23, brings limited professional experience into tonight’s start, having made one previous start in the fledgling Continental League in 2009 and pitching in just six independent professional games over the last two years. Signed in early June by the Can-Am League’s Quebec Les Capitales after leaving RailCats camp, Nicholson pitched twice in relief for Les Capitales, firing two perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts.
A standout college player at Division III University of Redlands in California, Nicholson was a two-time All-West Region and three-time All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection for the Bulldogs. In four seasons at Redlands, Nicholson amassed a 3.41 cumulative ERA and piled up 151 strikeouts. As a junior in 2008, Nicholson set the program’s single-season wins record by notching 12 victories.
Nicholson is slated to throw his first Northern League pitch tonight at 7 p.m. as the RailCats (17-14) look to make it back-to-back wins over the Goldeyes (17-13) following Monday’s 2-1 victory. Left-hander Chris Salamida (3-2, 3.26 ERA) will start for Winnipeg and the game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
