FARGO, N.D. 7-20-2010 – Casey Hoorelbeke threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks scored five unanswered runs to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-1 Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in the second game of a four-game series.
Hoorelbeke (7-2) came on for RedHawks starter Tyler Seaman with one out in the fifth inning and carried Fargo-Moorhead all the way to the ninth while the offense got in gear to take the lead. Hoorelbeke allowed just one hit and no walks while striking out three. The Northern League leader in ERA, Hoorelbeke earned his team-leading seventh win and lowered that ERA to 1.64.
The RailCats scored first Tuesday night, getting three consecutive singles off Seaman to start the game. Mike Massaro’s base hit brought Adam Klein in to score, but after the three straight singles the RailCats would record only four hits the rest of the night. The ‘Cats did put the leadoff man on in four of the first five innings, but Seaman was able to wiggle out of trouble each time in his second professional start.
Tom Thornton (1-6) was the tough-luck loser for the RailCats, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Thornton allowed a first inning run to tie the score, but the game remained 1-1 into the fifth as Thornton retired eight straight RedHawks at one point. The loss was Thornton’s sixth in as many starts.
Kole Zimmerman gave Fargo the lead for good in the fifth, tripling with one out and scoring on a Mike Coles sacrifice fly. The RedHawks got an insurance run in the sixth when Eric Campbell doubled in a run, and Fargo extended their lead to 5-1 when Alan Rick hit a bases loaded double in the eighth.
The RedHawks out-hit the RailCats 10-7 in the game, getting two hits from Campbell, Zimmerman, Nic Jackson and Jay Cox. Klein and Chris Carrara each had two hits for the RailCats, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
The four-game series between the RailCats (26-28) and RedHawks (32-19) continues Wednesday night at 7:02 p.m. with right-hander Nolan Nicholson (2-2, 6.29 ERA) making the start for the ‘Cats opposite Fargo left-hander Jake Laber (6-2, 3.63 ERA). The game will be broadcast on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: Mike Reese tripled in the second inning, the fourth straight game in which the RailCats have tripled … James Baker pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief in back of Thornton, taking over in the sixth and working into the eighth inning … the RailCats left at least one runner on in seven of nine innings.
